ECIBE Seminar in Halabja on Sustainable Housing and Waste Reduction

The seminar in Halabja brought together engineers, students, and environmental supporters to discuss two important topics that directly affect the future of our cities: sustainable renovation of residential units and practical methods for reducing waste. Organized with the support of the Halabja Union of Engineers, the Engineering Organization for Development, and Halabja University, the event created a strong space for learning and collaboration.

Halabja, like many cities in Kurdistan, is growing quickly. This growth demands better housing solutions and stronger environmental awareness. Renovating homes with passive and active strategies can reduce energy use, improve comfort, and support climate resilience. At the same time, lowering waste—especially plastic bags and bottles—helps protect public spaces, reduce pollution, and support cleaner communities.

Main Highlights of the Seminar

The first topic focused on renovation techniques that help buildings perform better. Passive strategies such as insulation, shading, and natural ventilation reduce energy consumption, while active systems like efficient lighting, solar energy, and modern HVAC technologies support long-term sustainability.
